A potential decentralised solution for a Consistent Staff Identity

Philip Graham and the Consistent Staff Identity project team discuss the locally-led collaboration between Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, NHS England, GMC, NHS Digital and industry which explored  solutions to the significant burdens on staff, employers and risks to patient safety arising through current NHS pre-employment processes and the mobility of healthcare professionals due to the unprecedented demand for their services.  A decentralised identity solution using  Distributed Ledger Technology was examined to enable several components representing professional bodies and employers that allow an employee, such as a Doctor, to share their digital credentials for example, complete digital pre-employment checks such as passport details, proof of address, GMC details and immunisation history.  This has been become the foundation and basis to enable  an employer to provision access to IT systems.
